Guide: grants to purchase an EV for individuals or businesses (2022)

Read on to find out what grants are available for you or your business to take advantage of when electrifying your transport.

Businesses and organisations that want to electrify their fleet, personal or employee transport have a range of options that would be eligible for government grants. The government's arm for enabling electric transport, Office for Zero Emission Vehicle (OZEV), offers plug-in grants from £1000 for zero-emission motorcycles, to £25,000 for zero-emission trucks.

Electric cars

Grant value: 35% of the price, up to a maximum of £1,500
Eligible cars must:

  • be able to travel at least 112km (70 miles) with zero tailpipe emissions
  • maximum price tag of £35,000 (inc. VAT and delivery fees)

Wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAV)

If you need a WAV, then the grant goes up to £2,500 with a limited total of 1000 available grants between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023.

Grant value: 35% of the price, up to a maximum of £2,500.
Eligible vehicles must:

  • be converted from a passenger vehicle (sometimes known as a ‘category M1 vehicle’)
  • have zero tailpipe CO2 emissions
  • be able to travel at least 112km (70 miles) without any emissions
  • maximum price tag of £35,000 (inc. VAT and delivery fees)

Other details:

  • Only 1000 grants are available between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023
  • Email PluginGrants@dft.gov.uk to check how many are left

Small electric vans

Grant value: 35% of the price, up to a maximum of £2,500.
Eligible vehicles must:

  • weigh less than 2,500 kg (gross vehicle weight)
  • have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km
  • be able to travel at least 96km (60 miles) without any emissions at all

Other details: You can claim a total of 1000 plug-in van and truck grants for your business or organisation each year. This limit resets every year on 1 April.

Large electric vans

Grant value: 35% of the price, up to a maximum of £5,000.
Eligible vehicles must:

  • weigh between 2,500 to 4250 kg (gross vehicle weight)
  • have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km
  • be able to travel at least 96km (60 miles) without any emissions at all

Other details: You can claim a total of 1000 plug-in van and truck grants for your business or organisation each year. This limit resets every year on 1 April.

Small Trucks

Grant value: 20% of the price, up to a maximum of £16,000.
Eligible vehicles must:

  • weigh between 4,250 kg and 12,000 kg (gross vehicle weight)
  • have CO2 emissions of at least 50% less than the equivalent conventional Euro VI vehicle that can carry the same capacity
  • be able to travel at least 96km (60 miles) without any emissions at all

Other details:

  • Maximum of 250 grants at £16,000 grant value between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023.
  • Obtain maximum of 10 grants at £16,000 grant value as an organisation.
  • If either limit reached, grant value becomes £5,000 at maximum.
  • Maximum of 1000 plug-in van and truck grants claimable as an organisation, per year. This limit resets every year on 1 April.

Large Trucks

Grant value: 20% of the price, up to a maximum of £25,000.
Eligible vehicles must:

  • weigh more than 12,000 kg (gross vehicle weight)
  • have CO2 emissions of at least 50% less than the equivalent conventional Euro VI vehicle that can carry the same capacity
  • be able to travel at least 96km (60 miles) without any emissions at all

Other details:

  • Maximum of 100 grants at £25,000 grant value between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023.
  • Obtain maximum of 5 grants at £25,000 grant value as an organisation.
  • If either limit reached, grant value becomes £16,000 at maximum with a limit of 10 grants per organisation.
  • Maximum of 250 grants at £16,000 grant value in total.
  • After that limit is reached, grant value becomes £5,000 at maximum.
  • Maximum of 1000 plug-in van and truck grants claimable as an organisation, per year. This limit resets every year on 1 April.
